Organized by Francisco Buera (Washington University), Elisa Giannone (CREI, UPF and BSE), Tatjana Kleinenberg (The World Bank), Martí Mestieri (IAE-CSIC and BSE).

This workshop focuses on macro-development, emphasizing the mechanisms that drive structural transformation, productivity growth, and income convergence across countries and regions. In the spirit of the Structural Transformation and Economic Growth (STEG) initiative, it seeks to deepen our understanding of how economies evolve as they diversify, urbanize, and modernize, and how policy and institutions can support inclusive and sustainable growth. We invite theoretical and empirical contributions addressing questions such as: The determinants of productivity and income differences across countries and regions.

  • Structural transformation and sectoral reallocation from agriculture to manufacturing and services.
  • The role of trade, technology, and human capital in shaping development paths.
  • Interactions between macroeconomic dynamics and micro-level frictions such as misallocation and informality.
  • Institutions, governance, and political economy dimensions of long-run development.
